Officers were called to the Lower Claremont Bank area at about 2.40am on Saturday. They are now appealing for witnesses after the victim reported that he had been attacked in the alleyway leading to Victoria Quay, between Montgomery's Tower pub and the Claremont Curry House.
Constable Rob Loach said: "I am keen to hear from anybody who was in Reflex nightclub that night and might have seen anything they believe might be connected to our investigation," he said.
"In particular, I am keen to hear from two women who walked through the alleyway leading to Victoria Quay between about 2am and 2.40am on Saturday and who are believed to have passed the victim and suspect.

A 28-year-old Shrewsbury man appeared before Shrewsbury magistrates today charged with attempted rape in connection with the incident. Durmus Akca, of New Street, Frankwell, was remanded in custody to appear before Shrewsbury Crown Court on February 8.
